MEMA Stops State Legislation to Tax Heating Oil and more MEMA has successfully stopped a state legislative effort to place a 2.5 cent tax on residential and commercial home heating oil gallons sold in Massachusetts. The tax would have funded an energy efficiency program that is similar to programs operated by natural gas and electric utilities. The state legislature passed final energy legislation—House 4568—that did not include the heating oil tax and another measure that MEMA opposed that would have created an energy rating/scoring system for homes prior to resale. MEMA is now offering new customer marketing materials to retailers in partnership with the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) and the American Energy Coalition (AEC). With the help of Consumer Focus Marketing, MEMA and NORA have created customer billing/mailing inserts to help retailers promote the evolution of heating oil to clean, renewable Bioheat. Retailers can order as many inserts as needed at no cost. Additionally, to help retailers continue to compete with gas utility marketing efforts, MEMA has worked once again with the American Energy Coalition to produce customer billing/mailing inserts.
