get the igniter to glow and then reading the microamps
created by the flame to igniter/sensor using the equipment
burner as ground.
Figure 1 (previous page) was developed by the author
of this article. It includes a list of parts needed to make
the switch tester and the wiring to get the switch to
work. Figure 3 (see page 14) shows microamp check with
a separate sensor.
Hot Surface Igniters Replacements
The distributor for Norton (Coorstek) Igniters is Robertshaw
Controls Co. They can be found in the latest
Robertshaw Catalogs under the Uni-Line 41-400 catalog
series for the Norton (Coorstek) 201 and 271 igniters. It
should be pointed out that the igniters that are offered
in the catalog are all 17-second warm-up time igniters
(Norton 271) with one exception, which is the Norton 201
C (Robertshaw 41-413) used on the Carlin Gas Conversion
burner only.
The Mini-igniters from Norton (Norton 601 series) are
carried under the Robertshaw catalog series 41-600.
It should be noted that the basic difference between
igniters is the ceramic base and the mounting brackets.
This makes for some difficulty in using them interchangeably
and this is not recommended. It is possible that the
mated plug on the lead wires may not match up with the
unit being replaced. In that case, the wires can be cut and
wire nuts can be used to join the wires.

41 400 Series Hot Surface Furnace Igniters
Robertshaw’s 41-400 Series Norton Hot Surface Igniters deliver dependable ignition in heating systems of
every description, from furnaces and boilers to rooftop heaters, infrared burners, unit heaters, water heaters
and many other types of HVAC equipment.
The 41-400 Series Hot Surface Igniters are made of high-purity recrystallized silicon carbide (Drystar) that
combines physical and thermal strength with stable electrical properties. The 41-400 Series are designed to
reach ignition temperature(s) within 17 seconds. They have 18-gauge nickel chrome lead wires embedded
and metalized in place for maximum holding strength and electrical conductivity. The lead wires are also
enclosed with special high-temperature fiberglass insulation, providing total electrical protection.
NOTE: All 41-400 series igniters are 120 VAC models. Some hot surface modules are rated for 208/240 volts
input, however they step the voltage to igniter down to 120 VAC.
